Summer marks the start of new residents and staff entering healthcare facilities, learning not only the physical layout but also new processes and procedures for ensuring safe and quality patient care. This influx of inexperience combined with significant turnover – dubbed the “July Effect” – can prove to be a concern for hospitals and result in adverse events and unwanted outcomes. Lack of awareness about the need to report incidents and poor communication practices are often to blame, and COVID-19 has only exacerbated the problem. So, what can be done?
By focusing on additional education in July and periodically throughout the tenure of new residents and hospital staff alike, organizations can set new team members up for success early on and improve their culture of patient safety.
